12 FAA Airspace Layers Every Commercial Drone Pilot Should Check Before Flying

Checking "the airspace" before a drone flight sounds simple. In practice, it means checking seven different types of airspace data - each with its own source, update frequency, and consequences for getting it wrong.

Most operators check one or two layers (airspace class, maybe TFRs) and skip the rest. That works until it does not - until you are flying in an active military operations area you did not know about, or 2.8 nautical miles from a stadium on game day.

LAANC Authorization Ceilings

Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs)

Dynamic restrictions the FAA issues for specific events, emergencies, and security operations. TFRs define a geographic area, altitude range, and time window during which drone operations are prohibited or restricted.

Why you should check it: TFRs are the most time-sensitive airspace check. They can appear overnight for presidential travel, wildfire suppression, sporting events, space launches, and emergencies. A TFR that was not there when you planned the job on Monday can be active when you show up on Wednesday.

Special Use Airspace (SUAs)

Designated areas where flight activities are restricted or require caution. Includes restricted areas, prohibited areas, warning areas, and alert areas. Managed by the FAA in coordination with the military and other agencies.

Why you should check it: Restricted areas may allow access with permission but are often closed to drones. Prohibited areas (like P-56 over the White House) are exactly what the name implies - no operations, period. Flying in prohibited airspace is a federal violation that can result in criminal charges, not just FAA enforcement.

Military Operations Areas

Designated airspace for military training activities like air combat maneuvers, intercepts, and formation flying. Military operations areas (MOAs) typically extend from the surface to high altitudes and can cover large geographic areas.

Why you should check it: MOAs can overlap rural commercial drone work areas in ways you would not expect. Agricultural operators, pipeline inspectors, and large-area surveyors are most likely to encounter MOAs because they tend to cover open, low-population areas - exactly where these jobs happen.

Tip: MOAs do not technically prohibit drone operations, but flying in an active MOA puts you in shared airspace with high-speed military aircraft. Check activation schedules through the controlling agency.

Stadium Restrictions

A standing restriction under 14 CFR 99.7 that prohibits drone operations within a 3-nautical-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet AGL around major stadiums and open-air venues. Activates one hour before scheduled events and ends one hour after.

Why you should check it: This restriction catches operators who plan jobs near stadiums without checking the event schedule. A roof inspection three miles from a football stadium is fine on Tuesday but illegal on Saturday during a game. The 3-nautical-mile radius is larger than most people expect - roughly 3.45 statute miles.

Tip: If you regularly work within 4 miles of a major stadium, keep the venue's event schedule bookmarked. Between events, the airspace reverts to its normal classification.

FRIA Boundaries

FAA-Recognized Identification Areas where recreational drone pilots can fly without Remote ID broadcasting equipment. These are designated areas, typically at AMA-chartered clubs and educational institutions.

Why you should check it: FRIA boundaries do not restrict Part 107 commercial operations. You can fly commercially in or near a FRIA without issue. However, knowing where FRIAs are tells you where recreational drone traffic concentrates - pilots flying without Remote ID, potentially without situational awareness of your commercial operation.

Tip: Treat FRIA locations as heads-up areas for increased recreational traffic. Be aware that other drones may be operating without Remote ID nearby.

National Parks

National Park Service policy (36 CFR 1.5) prohibits launching, landing, or operating drones within national park boundaries. This is a blanket prohibition - not a restriction with waivers or authorizations.

Why you should check it: The NPS drone prohibition applies to all pilots, including Part 107 certificate holders. There is no waiver process, no special authorization, and no exceptions for commercial work. Operators near national park boundaries need to verify their launch and operating area does not cross into park land.

Tip: National park boundaries do not always follow obvious geographic features. A ranch bordering a national park may include NPS territory. Check the boundary layer before flying near any NPS-managed land.
